Support for Families

This page provides advice and information for families impacted by the justice system.

Scottish Sentencing Council website hosts information about sentencing across the justice system.  They have produced a number of short videos which help explain how judges decide sentences in criminal court cases, and what sentences can be given in Scotland.

The list of justice terms, acronyms and abbreviations document explains a number of key terms used in Court and during legal proceedings as well as acronyms and abbreviations people may refer to.  There is also information about the range of community sentences a person can receive.

Prison

The Scottish Prison Service website provides information for families around visiting and supporting family and friends in prison.

HMP Kilmarnock Visitors’ Centre provides a warm, welcoming environment to the families and visitors coming to the prison.  The team provide a tailored support package to anyone who requires this, and regular contact is maintained wherever required.  Support is available to address housing, addictions, benefits, and health while being able to assist with any issues their loved one may be having while in custody.  Telephone: 078 833 30695 / 078 833 27712.

The Croft Visitors Centre has been supporting people visiting HMP Barlinnie since 2012.  Staff welcome visitors and support them to have a better visit, using an assertive outreach approach. This includes giving people information about visit procedures, how to claim travel expenses and additional support that is available.  The Croft have produced a short film to highlight what to do and what to expect when visiting someone in HMP Barlinnie.

Families Outside is the only national charity in Scotland working exclusively on behalf of families affected by imprisonment.  They provide impartial  information and support on issues such as housing, finance, and emotional support.    Further information can be accessed on their website or via their Helpline: 0800 254 0088.

Community Justice Directory

The Community Justice Directory contains a list of services and organisations across Ayrshire who are working to support people impacted by the justice system.  Information within the Community Justice Directory is split into different sectors, e.g. Alcohol and Drug Treatment and Recovery Services, Family Support, Housing and Justice Services, etc.

Housing Factsheets

Housing Factsheets have been created to support partners and / or families who have a loved one in prison and to help them understand the housing processes in place when someone is serving a prison sentence.    There is one factsheet available for each local authority area in Ayrshire.
