This symposium will provide local authorities, clinical commissioners, mental health teams, employment, housing and welfare services, criminal justice agencies and other stakeholders with an opportunity to engage with the government’s drug strategy, develop ideas for effective prevention, treatment and recovery, and debate wider reform to drugs policy.

It will also provide a forum for delegates to share best practice on delivering an integrated multi-agency response to drug dependency and misuse.

Programme

  • Assess the potential for tackling drug misuse provided by the government’s white paper: Swift, Certain, Tough: New Consequences for Drug Possession
  • Develop solutions for how local partners can work together to reduce drug-related harm
  • Identify successful programs and measures to reduce drug dependency and misuse, decrease crime, improve health, and reduce hospital admissions and assess their implementation
  • Consider the wider determinants of drug dependency, including growing deprivation, and draw constructive conclusions for further action
  • Examine current recovery-oriented ambitions and ways to facilitate the progress of service users towards recovery goals
  • Identify how to meet the needs of vulnerable young people and communities, building resilience and minimising harm through effective safeguarding protocols and support measures
