The National Prison and Police Care Networks are delighted to host a webinar on “Talking About” A new justice specific mental health & wellbeing toolkit in NHSGGC on Wednesday 2 September, 13:00 – 14:00. We will hear from Scott Bissell, Health Improvement Lead -Community Justice, NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde.
The “Talking About” toolkit is a trauma informed and recovery focused toolkit co designed by staff and people in the justice system to help those struggling with their mental health and wellbeing. Lead by NHSGGC and commissioned to Penumbra Mental Health to develop the toolkit aims to help staff support people to develop awareness of the symptoms of distress and reduce the impact of trauma-based dysregulation. It’s designed to help justice staff and the supported person understand the thoughts, emotions and behaviours associated with the person’s experience of mental ill health; the conversation tools and resources follow a person-centred recovery model. The toolkit aims to promote empowerment, reduce distress and enable people to gain some control over factors impacting their mental health and wellbeing.
The toolkit comprises:
- A mental health conversation guidance booklet providing the background and knowledge base for staff use of the tools.
- The Talking About mental health booklet that provides a selection of trauma informed tools and activities to use with people.
- The Talking About conversation cards for use with people as part of a general recovery focused conversation.
Training in the use of the toolkit is provided to ensure staff feel supported in its effective use and confident they can integrate use into their practice to have meaningful structured mental health and wellbeing conversations. So far in in NHSGCC we’ve delivered training across Prisons, Prison healthcare, Police Custody healthcare, Justice Social Work and Unpaid Work settings.
The webinar will provide an overview of the:
- background and development of the toolkit.
- toolkit resources and examples of use
- accompany staff training and model of delivery.
- evaluation of the pilot rollout
- ongoing developments
